You may have never considered seeing the Hello Kitty universe combined with virtual reality in the same game. But that will change at the end of 2025 with the release of Hello Kitty Skyland, a social VR game project jointly developed by Thirdverse and Sanrio Company. To kick-start the pre-release process, its creators have announced they have opened applications for its Creator Program, through which they aim to build a vibrant community. They have also mentioned that the game will initially launch in Early Access at the end of the year.
Game Overview
Hello Kitty Skyland is an innovative social VR game set in a virtual world called Skyland, where Sanrio characters live. Players from around the world can gather to enjoy a variety of activities and interactions unlike anything seen before in Hello Kitty games.
In addition to immersive encounters with Sanrio characters in VR, the game offers multiplayer experiences that make full use of your hand controls, as well as features such as item crafting and customization of both your personal space and avatar, delivering the unique appeal of VR. Through extensive customization, cooperation, and competition, players can enjoy a truly diverse range of experiences.
Two Avatars for Self-Expression
In this game, players have access to two distinct avatar styles and can freely switch between them. The humanoid style offers extensive customization and dress-up options, allowing players to express their individuality within the world. The other style is designed for moving freely throughout Skyland, enabling dynamic and intuitive VR actions unique to the medium.
This style is an original player avatar created under the design concept supervised by Sanrio. By seamlessly switching between these two styles, players can fully enjoy both communication and action within Skyland.
Masaru Ohnogi, CEO and the Executive Producer of this project, previously served as the producer of the avatar communication service TinierMe, which gained over 5 million users—especially among teenage girls in North America. Now, leveraging that experience, he is bringing the world of Hello Kitty to life in a highly immersive VR environment, evolving the stage from PC to a next-generation virtual space.
