Sakura Wars has attempted to return to the mainstream on several occasions. The last time was with the Sakura Wars game released in 2019, an attempted reboot in which PlayStation 4 users were reunited with Sega’s robot universe. However, the magic of Sakura Taisen, as the franchise is known in Japan, may never return.
In the days of the Sega Saturn, Sakura Wars represented one of the most successful video game franchises in the Japanese market. Sega based much of its revenue on the one coming from Sakura Taisen, and its games were always at the top. However, although it maintained some of its popularity even on the Dreamcast and also had versions on PlayStation 2, the series never regained its former popularity. However, that doesn’t stop Sega from continuing to leverage the license to surprise its fans. This time, it has been announced that, starting August 25, a Sakura Wars collaboration with the mahjong game Sega NET Mahjong MJ will be available in Japan.
The collaboration applies to all versions of Sega NET Mahjong MJ, both those available on PC, Android and iOS mobile devices, as well as the arcade version, which is very popular on Japanese game centers. The collaboration event is called the Sakura Taisen Cup and will run until September 14th in several phases. Of course, it will be an ideal opportunity to enjoy the gacha and try to obtain characters, although Sega has indicated that there will be a limit to the number of SR characters users can obtain.
Thus, the Sakura Wars Gacha will feature a total of five different SSR cards, in addition to nine with SR versions, 32 wallpapers, five EX backgrounds, a Rex slot item, and other unlockables. Sega doesn’t want users to become obsessed with the gacha and, to avoid potential incidents, indicates that there is a limit of two SSR characters. Furthermore, although there are five SSR card models in the gacha, there are actually only three characters. The reason for this is that there are two Sakura Shinguji SR gachas, two Ichiro Ogami SR gachas, and one Erica Fontaine SR gacha. The two Sakura and Ichiro gachas are in the casual uniform and the combat uniform, while Erica’s gacha is in the combat uniform. Erica’s casual uniform card can be obtained by playing without the gacha, so this will be a great addition.
It’s worth noting that each SSR card has its own voices and effects, and during the event, you can also obtain SR cards for the main characters’ mech combat units. The Sakura Taisen SR collection also includes cards for other characters in the series universe, with all the heroines in their combat uniforms. In addition, end-of-match visual effects can be obtained, and the iconic song “Geki! Teikoku Kagekidan” is included in full version in the game.
